Heritage
A family business
since 1960.
Three generations. One promise. Built in Vientiane.
Chapter I · 1960–1975
Phya Chamnongphanij
Thao Bo.
Founder of Thao Bo Ice Factory. Known to Thai merchants as Khun Bo.
Mr. Bo · Lao Lions Club Directory, 1971
In 1960, Mr. Bo started from scratch.
Vientiane was a city where refrigeration was rare and ice was essential. He opened the Thao Bo Ice Factory with a single objective: supply the city with clean, reliable ice. Production began at 400 blocks per day, 165 kg each.
Over the next fifteen years, the family expanded into transportation and grew the business across two industries — work that would draw the attention of Thai industrialists in Bangkok and U.S. officials stationed in Vientiane.
The Boualoy
The largest steel ship on the Mekong.
Thao Bo Transporteur ran trucks and freight across Laos. Its flagship was the Boualoy — the largest steel ship operating on the Mekong River between Thailand and Laos.
Every year, Mr. Bo took passengers on the Boualoy to towns along the river for Tod Kan Tin, the Buddhist merit-making journey. Passage was free — including for students and pilgrims who could not have afforded the trip otherwise.
1967 · U.S. Embassy, Vientiane
Honest, capable, exemplary.
"You did, in my opinion, render and outstanding service to the Mission — in providing services on short notice, and under difficult conditions. You were honest, capable and accomplished your services in a highly exemplary manner."
Clockwise from top-left · Lions Club at Bangkok train station 1974 · Hosting American friends at home, baci ceremony 1975 · USAID officials on the rooftop 1975 · Wat Payang Temple 1973
Civic life, near and far.
Mr. Bo was a member of Lions Club International, attending meetings in Bangkok alongside Thai industrialists — including founders of what would later become some of Thailand's largest companies. Thai merchants knew him as Khun Bo, mistaking him for someone of royal background.
In Vientiane, he hosted USAID personnel in traditional baci ceremonies, celebrated Buddhist festivals at temples like Wat Payang, and entertained American diplomats at home.
Chapter II · 1975
Everything paused.
With the change of regime, the new government took ownership of all Thao Bo Transportation trucks and the Boualoy ship. The transportation business closed. The ice factory paused production that same year.
Mr. Bo's business card from that year listed two phone numbers — one for the office, one for the ice factory. For nearly a decade, the family's two businesses stayed dormant.
1985–87 · The comeback
Mr. Bo and his daughter's family restarted ice production. By 1987, the factory was producing 100 blocks per day. Smaller than before — but operating.
Chapter III · 1995–Today
The modernization.
New leadership. New equipment. Industrial scale.
Peak daily output

1995 marked the start of Bo Ice's biggest era of change.
That year, Mr. Thavisack — the youngest son of Mr. Bo — returned to Vientiane after years of studies abroad and took over the business. The decades that followed brought sustained reinvestment: new industrial-scale ice machines, an expansion from a single ice format to five, and by 2014, ASEAN-class manufacturing technology — same standards, same equipment, made in Laos.
Today, Bo Ice's peak daily output runs into the thousand-ton range.
